Malaysia Beats Maldives 3-0 In An International Friendly

3 November 2018

Malaysia beats Maldives 3-0 in tonight's International friendly match played in Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Zaquan Adha Razdak, the Malaysian captain, who has been under fire for a dry spell in for the national side scored the opener in the 16th minute.

Maldives took the game to Malaysia, conceding the early goal. Malaysia shot stopper Khairul Fahmi had a busy day keeping Maldives at bay, notable shots from Ali Fasir(Sentey) and Ibahim Mahudhee(Feydhoo Ibbe).

On the 81st minute Malaysia scored their second goal through twenty one year old striker Muhammad Safawi. Two minutes into stoppage time Mohamadou Sumareh killed all hopes for Maldives scoring Malaysia's third goal.

Not a bad performance, but some things must be noted. Hussain Shareef's performance was largely encouraging even though he looked understandably nervous. I don't blame him for the second goal, as I understand that keepers are encouraged to punch, rather than catch balls by the coaching staff (we saw Faisal doing this in recent matches). Safawi's strike on that rebound was extraordinary, and he wouldn't have been able to do it 99 times out of 100. I was disappointed by our front men, as they wasted some very clear-cut opportunities. Also, our midfield looked incapable of winning second balls when trying to stop Malaysia from counterattacking, something that I noticed during the group stage of the SAFF Suzuki Cup. Overall, even though the final scoreline was hugely disappointing, and by no means reflected the game as I thought Malaysia's backline looked rather poor, it was nice to see the boys pushing for a goal until the final whistle. The mistakes that we saw in this match could be resolved by playing more games, and this is why playing regular friendlies is so important. FAM have announced that they would be reserving 36 days for the national team starting from next year, and I hope to see them arrange more friendlies like this. This will not only help our players to gel, but also give them more exposure to other nations.
